"I feel so honored to have the opportunity to play the Daniel Pearl Memorial Viola. I want to be able to share his message of peace and harmony through the music that I play with the Anchorage Youth Symphony, my band, and with everyone that I meet and for whom I perform. I want to share this important message with as many people as I can."
Sarah Bartholomew first picked up the violin when she was five years old. She started with classical music, studying the Suzuki method. At the age of six, she attended her first bluegrass camp for children under the instruction of Bearfoot. Thanks to Angela Oudean and Jason Norris, she became hooked on bluegrass. She then expanded her musical horizons by learning a variety of genres including jazz, swing, and blues. She plays several five-string instruments and piano and enjoys writing her own music.
Sarah has always enjoyed the deeper tones and purchased a five-string fiddle. It was the love of this sound that led her to the viola. During the 2011 Mark O’Connor String Camp in Tennessee, she began to realize all the possibilities that the viola could give her.
Born and raised in Girdwood, Alaska, Sarah is a local celebrity and role model. She got her first taste of performing on stage when she was eight, after being awarded with a scholarship from the Girdwood Forest Fair. Through the support of that scholarship, she was able to attend other music camps in Alaska.
As she grew older, Sarah began to express an interest in attending camps in the “Lower 48”. Among these, her favorites are the Father’s Day Festival in California, Rockygrass in Colorado, and Mark O’Connor String Camps. At these camps, she has had the opportunity to study and play with great musicians such as Frank Solivan, Peter Rowan, Chris Eldridge, Jeremy Garrett and Mike Barnett, and she has even shared the stage with Rhonda Vincent.
Sarah is currently taking viola lessons with Lee Wilkins, formerly from Eastman College of Music. In July of 2012, she was awarded third place in a national fiddle competition at Rockygrass Bluegrass Festival in Lyons, Colorado. She is Principal Violist in the Polaris K-12 School orchestra, is a member of and Principal Violist in the Anchorage Youth Symphony, and is now a member of All State Orchestra. Sarah is also a founding member of the band Sarahndipity, who perform at local venues. She hopes to attend Berklee College of Music to major in Music Therapy so that she can help others through her passion for music.
