Freedom at the Cost of a Friend by Nate Lathrop
I wrote this song for Daniel, while sitting on base waiting to be shipped off to Afghanistan. I did write it for Daniel, but here is the strange part. I wrote this song a couple of days before he died, I wrote it before I had any knowledge of Daniel Pearl.
I am now a Retired Lieutenant Coronal from the United States Air force. My partner is also retired from the Air Force. We own the Rolling Thunder Saloon, where every Sept 11th we honor a fallen soldier. We have a beautiful ceremony, candle lighting, words, moment of silence.
I worked my career as a flight nurse and flew many of our boys out of there. But somehow for some reason Daniel Pearl is part of my life.
Freedom at the Cost of a Friend
Freedom at the cost of a friend Freedom at the cost of a friend He went in to fight but it did not turn out right Freedom at the cost of a friend
Soldier by day Soldier by night I told his wife he would be all right
Left behind his wife to lead a noble life I told his kids he'd be alright
I told his wife he'd be alright Freedom at the cost of a friend
